Anthony Lunch OS receives RYA Lifetime Commitment Award
Congratulations to Anthony Lunch (OS 1963) on winning an RYA Lifetime Commitment Award in recognition of his commitment to Oxford University Yacht Club.
Anthony started sailing at Chipstead Sailing Club in 1955 and continued training at Sevenoaks School under Ernie Groves and Brian Scragg.
He said: ‘Before long I was a very junior member of the Sevenoaks team and from then on my abilities improved and my love of team racing was fuelled by exciting fixtures and senior boys’ expert tuition. All this culminated in the Public Schools Championships in 1961, when (with Barry Stacey) we came second, and then the following year, when we were lucky enough to win, and bring home a new Firefly to join the school fleet. In all my years of racing, this remains one of the highlights!’
Anthony has been a member of Oxford University YC for more than 50 years, both as a student and alumnus of the university, and has served as Commodore, Vice President and President. As a Life Member, he provides financial and logistical support to the students, ensuring that donations have been used appropriately to purchase boats and support student sailing. He has organised Varsity matches, hosted training events, facilitated participation in Cowes Week and raised the international profile of Oxford University YC through an exchange programme with students in Japan. His wholehearted commitment to the club spans every aspect of club activity and life.
‘I am extremely pleased to have been nominated and regard the award as a great honour and totally unexpected,’ says Anthony. ‘To help and encourage youth sailing is a particular privilege and I have had enormous enjoyment from sailing, both in dinghies and keelboats over many years.
‘It goes without saying that what I have achieved at Oxford would never have been possible without the support and encouragement of the sailing masters at Sevenoaks School.’
