Sevenoaks shooters enjoy victory over Imperial College

The shooting club had another exciting day, competing against Imperial College and finishing with another unexpected victory and the match top scorer in our ranks.

Former Club Captain from 2012, Serena Yuen (OS 2012), now in her final year at Imperial College, brought a formidable team to Sevenoaks. Many of their best shots had averages of up to 98. Sadly, one of their shooters couldn’t make it, but this was a relief to Sevenoaks as that meant our stronger shooters could play a more dominant role.

To our surprise we led from the first detail, but only just. Credit to our big hitters, Cecilia Catuogno-Cal (match top scorer) and Gabriel Shaft, who led with scores of 194 and 191; they are expected to put in performances of this standard, but that doesn’t make it any easier.

Small squads often lack depth and there was no certainty that our lead was sufficient to counter a comeback from Imperial. However, Max Murray and David Edmondson put in two magic performances, possibly their best yet, and secured us another win.

Queen Alexandra Stage 2

In another recent competition, Sevenoaks shooter Gabriel Shaft was congratulated by the county captain for his achievements.

The top six scorers from stage 2 of the Queen Alexandra competition go forward as a county team into Stage 3 to earn a place in the national finals. There is stiff opposition: many county shooters have been shooting this competition for many years and regularly reach the finals.

However, the county captain congratulated Gabriel Shaft, whose efforts meant that he finished just outside the reserve cut-off position (his T2 target was of a lower score to the others he drew with on aggregate points). Gabriel achieved this with only two weeks of training. We will be doing more work for this competition over the next year and hope those below Gabriel will pick up where he left off and be shooting in this county team.
