Art trip to New York City
The Sixth Form Art trip to New York City took us to famous galleries such as the MET, the Museum of Modern Art and The Guggenheim where there are pieces that you’ve only seen pictures of. You can spend days wandering around the MET and still not see everything it has to offer and wandering up the spiralled inside of The Guggenheim is an experience in itself. We saw paintings by artist such as Van Gogh, Picasso and Monet as well as discovering local artists in the commercial galleries of the Chelsea District.
We stayed in a youth hostel by the name of the YMCA. It’s located in a wonderful spot which was accessible via the subway station near Columbus Circle on the south west corner of Central Park. The subway played an essential role in our transport around New York, and was actually quite enjoyable to experience as it’s quite different to the underground in London.
We also got to experience so much of New York City. We walked through Times Square and went on a Brooklyn Street Art tour which was a dream for any aspiring photographers, mural or street artists. We also visited The Vessel which was designed by Old Sennockian Thomas Heatherwick, walked down the High Line, and experienced the famous Broadway musical Chicago. In addition, lunch times were free to explore the nearby area in the search of a restaurant, and we were able to find some real hidden gems by staying away from the typical fast-food places.
Overall, the Art trip to New York City is a must for any Sevenoaks IB student studying art.
