Community support

Service during Covid-19

As the Covid-19 pandemic has developed, it has been inspiring to see our pupils, parents, staff and community partners reaching out to others. It is clear that everyone is recognising the power of small acts of kindness, individual gestures of support, and personal and collective attempts to connect with our community. Part of this is following and spreading understanding of current government advice.

Following other schools, we’ve created a team of staff volunteers and we are working with Sevenoaks District Council to assist local people who need support.

Collections

We are also collecting again. A food and hygiene collection will supply four food banks. Pupils have helped remotely, designing posters, and some students who live locally have also delivered items on daily walks. We’ve supported the Care for our Community Sevenoaks communication device drop-off. When disinfected mobile phones, tablets and laptops are donated, they have a team of tech volunteers ready to wipe devices and prepare them for a new user, offering ongoing support to help people connect with their families remotely and access online information.

Assisting the elderly

We have been amazed at the number of initiatives from Sevenoaks students. One pupil remotely helped to design labels and leaflets for flowers donated by a local florist and sent to our local elderly community for Mothering Sunday. Others have designed leaflets offering ideas for pupils to support people in their home communities.

We are keeping in touch with AgeUK for advice, as well as reaching out to local care homes we already support through our service programme. Pupils are keen to continue relationships already established and build new friendships.

Fundraising

Funds are also vital for local organisations at this time.

Please click here to donate to our local community support fund, which has already received significant support with its aim to help local food banks, Age UK and Friends for Families with their work.

One student, Agata Rigo Saitta, has launched a campaign uniting with students from 25 universities and schools to fundraise to support the work of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in Italy, France and China. You can support this via their #studentsunite Go Fund Me page

We are all finding our feet, and exploring different problems and solutions; if any individual or organisation in the community believes we can help them or they can help us, please do not hesitate to get in touch with our community support team via Miss Cat Davison.

Schools rest at the centre of our communities; when we unite to identify, understand and support the needs of those near to us, we can together combat feelings of isolation and moments of vulnerability.
