Refugee Week
This week we have hosted our school Refugee Week, led by the Refugee Action service group and Charity Committee, following the international week theme in June of ‘We Cannot Walk Alone’. Throughout this week, we have aimed to develop our collective understanding of the diverse experiences relating to refugees today, as well as to introduce students to new ways to support others through informed action.
We have offered a number of workshops and specially designed lessons for students to engage with as well as a variety of fundraising activities including a home clothes day fundraiser in support of UNHCR alongside the Masked Miler fundraiser, a school-wide fundraising challenge in partnership with our Masked Miler challenge, aiming to run/row/walk or cycle the distance to Syria and back (5486 miles) to raise money for Sevenoaks Welcomes Refugees in the process.
We have also hosted several fantastic speakers including Humphrey Pring, former chair of Sevenoaks Welcomes Refugees; David Skinner OBE, former Head of Save the Children's Rohingya Response; Eric Le Guen, Senior Field Security Adviser and Global Analyst at UNHCR; Amjad Saleem (OS 1996), Protection and Inclusion Manager, Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies; and Christy Lefteri, author of the novel The Beekeeper of Aleppo.
In addition we have invited our local community to join in with our art competition and activities. Our symbolic art mural is now taking shape thanks to the Art for the Community service group, with students creating designs from their own feet based on the theme of the week, while engaging with the experiences of refugees.
