OS Golf Match Report November 2020

Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by next year’s fixtures.....
But first, a quick reminder of this year’s ups and downs:
Sadly the front end of our season was wiped out by some strange bug that was doing the rounds, which meant the loss of our afternoon at Knole and our first visit to Sweetwoods. Fortunately the latter was squeezed into October to replace another new fixture, Piltdown, as they were having so much fairway trouble that they suggested we postpone until next year. Many clubs have had enormous problems with fairways this year due to winter flooding and then heat and drought In early summer. On top of this, leather jackets had decimated the grass roots on all except links courses so winter rules were the order of the day at many clubs throughout the season. Thought: are the scarcity of starlings the reason why there are so many leather jackets? One for Ian Topp.
A recent record of 22 of us assembled at Crowborough Beacon in July for what was virtually the club’s first society visit of the year. Unfortunately it drizzled and drizzled all day and with the club’s kitchen still closed and only canned beer on offer things weren’t at their best. Next year will be better. Hever in September was a different matter entirely. After a fine breakfast, 15 of us enjoyed sparkling weather and we were able to welcome three newcomers in Chris Walker, Peter Croft-Baker and Andy Coates. Being younger than the majority of us they managed to empty my wine cellar of prizes with some long hitting on dry fairways. They’ll be back! The weather was also kind to us at Sweetwoods Park in October when another turnout of 15 enjoyed breakfast and a competitive round at this attractive new fixture set in rolling Kent parkland.
