We were delighted to welcome Lower Sixth students from five local schools for a student-run Model Conference of the Parties (COP).
The event opened with a talk from Richard Zaltzman (OS 1991), Chief Executive & Chief Impact Officer at EIT Food, who outlined the successes and shortcomings of recent COPs and encouraged the students to focus on building on the positive work being done.
Students then worked in cross-school groups to formulate proposed resolutions to a range of climate challenge scenarios including how to move closer to a circular economy, how AI and technology can drive sustainable solutions and how we can balance the world’s growing demand for energy responsibly.Students were encouraged to consider each challenge from a range of countries’ perspectives. Groups then had a chance to share their ideas and receive feedback before presenting and defending their final solutions.
We closed the afternoon with an uplifting and inspiring talk from Jasmina Georgovska from the Jane Goodall Institute who shared the following from the late Jane Goodall: “Every single day you live you make a difference in the world, and you get to choose what that difference is. Don’t lose hope. If you lose hope, you become apathetic and do nothing”.
Thank you to all those who gave their time.
