Sporting highlights

Athletics

Congratulations to Jake Brislane who won a Bronze medal representing Bermuda in the Boys 5000m U20 competition at the CARIFTA games.

At the boys’ athletics meet at Epsom we competed against Epsom, Hurst, Cranleigh, RGS Guildford, Eastbourne College and St John’s. Our juniors (Year 9) and inters (Year 10 and 11) each finished third and the seniors (Year 12) came in fifth, leading us to a position of fourth overall. Congrats to David Abobade who broke the school record in the Shot Put with a throw of 13.14m (currently ranked fifth best in the UK).

At the girls’ meet at Hurst we competed versus Benenden, Brighton College, Burgess Hill, Caterham, Charterhouse, Cranleigh, Eastbourne, Epsom, Hurst and Roedean. Our juniors and seniors finished fifth, and the inters took fourth leading again to a fourth overall finish. Particular well done to the senior girls who only had four participants and still took fifth.

Basketball

Elodie De Jonge along with her U14 squad went to Spain to represent England in the U16 Globasket Tournament. Over five days, they played six matches with the last game being the final. Unfortunately they missed out on the top spot by nine points to finish second. She had a great time with her new teammates and coaching staff and was very proud to represent her country.

Golf

At the HMC Foursomes Regional semi-final, Sevenoaks beat Ardingly 3-0. We are through to the regional final for only the second time in the last 23 years! The regional final will be against Tonbridge. Well done to Tom Day (U6), Ollie Pryal (U6) and Fred Ivey (L6)!

Fencing

Old Sennockian Amelie Tsang won the Cadet (U17) World Championships in Bulgaria.

Football

Chipstead U17s not only secured the Mid Sussex U17 league title last Sunday (with one match to go) but also put on an amazing performance winning the U17 Mid Sussex Cup Final at Oakwood FC in Crawley. Tan Rabe (L6) scored a penalty to go 2-1 up at half time and Tom Davies (OS) scored two in the second half to wrap it up 4-1. Special mention to Oli Haworth (L6) who stepped in to go in goal not only for the title winning match last Sunday but also in the cup match.

Hockey

Summer Knight-Thompson and Bella Munoz represented England U16 in the Four Nations invitational. Summer also captained the side. Josefina Hippe also represented England U18.

Rugby

Hamish McQueen represented Saracens U16 EPDG with fixtures against Bath (35-0 W) and Harlequins (28-28 D). Following a really impressive performance, he was then selected to play against Sale Sharks (34-29 W) at Loughborough University.

Charlie Peters was invited to train with the Harlequins Women’s squad over the Easter break. Charlie normally plies her trade in the Harlequins U18s squad and this was particularly impressive achievement, given that she was one of only two players selected.

Sailing

Head of Sailing Andy Cornah defended the UK Team Racing Championships title for the seventh time. The team included Year 9 sports scholar Izzy Johnson, who becomes a two-time senior national champion, sailing with her father, Old Sennockian Dom Johnson (OS 1997).

Squash

Ciara Boulanger will play the French junior championships later in May in Bordeaux.

Congratulations to Zeb Young, our squash professional, who has been named Coach of the Year by England Squash.

Swimming

Both Eva and Izzy Okaro qualified for the British Swimming Championships in April. Izzy swam the 50Free and got into the Junior Final. Eva qualified for the 50 and 100 Free and Fly. She made all the Open Finals and came away the British Junior Champion in three events: 50m Free & Fly and the 100 Free. She also came third in the Open 50 Free.
